All of the items on this page that are marked "Museum Piece" were a part of the Southwestern Archaeological Institute collection from Alamogordo New Mexico.  This Museum contained pottery from most all the different cultures in the American Southwest, along with many pieces of Casas Grandes Pottery.  This collection also contained one of the largest collections of Mimbres Pottery in the world.  The Mimbres, a branch of the Mogollon Culture, were the premier potters of their time and are considered by many experts to be of the very best pottery available.

Culture:  Anasazi
Circa:  A. D. 1175 1300
Dimensions:  6 1/8" long x 2 5/8" wide
Comments:  This very unusual ladle was found by Walter W. Hayes between 1896 and 1899.  A friend of the Wetherill's, he was among the adventurers to explore the Mesa Verde area before it became a National Park prior to the antiquity act of 1906.  Thanks to these early explorers we were introduced to an intriguing culture of people that thrived in the canyon cliffs of the prehistoric Southwest.  This ladle has an interesting story to tell!  It was used as a paint brush holder as you can see by the many paint spots where the paint brushes were placed inside to rest.  The rim area was used to remove excess paint from the brush.  What is most interesting about this application is that the artist  chose to re-fire this dish to permanently preserve these brush marks!  Did this belong to a deceased family member or perhaps they simply enjoyed the random pattern of the paint spots.  this item comes with an old black and white photo of the Walter W. Hayes collection.  You can see this Ladle on the second row up from the bottom, fourth from the left.  Copies of an old 1947 news paper article with this photo and story of the Hayes collection will accompany this item.  Writing on the back of the photo states that the collection was acquired between 1896 and 1899.

Four mile Polychrome Bowl
Culture:  Mogollon
Circa:  1325 - 1400
Dimensions:  13" wide x 4 3/4" high
Comments:  This is a very large bowl and has important Iconography and Imagery.  It was found at the Four Mile Ruin in Snowflake, Arizona.  The Iconography across the shoulders and wings of the bird could be representative of the rising sun.  It is interesting to note that the bird image is made up of a series of flight and sun motifs.  We have named this bowl "The Rising Sunbird".  This is a very important bowl to say the least.
The bowl has been broken and glued with an estimated ten to fifteen percent restoration, the most of this is in the rim.

        $8,500.00 plus $36.85 S&H.

Ramos Fish Effigy
Culture:
Casas Grande

Dimensions: 5 1/2" W x 8 1/2" L x 3 1/2" H
Comments: This is a beautiful example that is in very good condition.  The mouth has raised whiskers painted off each side.  This feature could be representative of a catfish.  Four suspension holes perhaps for a braided handle.  The top of the fin has been restored  as seen in the before restoration photo.  There is no other restoration.  All original paint!  Very nicely painted with artful design.   "Museum Piece"

Mimbres Geometric
Culture: Mogollon
Circa: A. D. 1000-1150
Dimensions: 7 1/2" wide x 3 1/4" high
Comments: This very different bowl has a visual cross weave pattern that is not often seen in a complete image.  Quite often a kill hole will take out the center culmination of this type of image.  This bowl on the other hand, exhibits the complete design and lacks a kill hole.
This really nice bowl has been glued in large pieces with a couple of tiny chips filled.  "Museum Piece"
